2 to 1 'Y' Branch Solar MC4 Connector Pair

The Exotronic 2 to 1 Y Branch Solar Connector Pair provides a simple way to connect two compatible solar panels in parallel and combine them into a single positive and negative output pair.

It is useful when expanding a 4WD, caravan, camper or off grid solar system where two panels need to feed the same solar regulator while keeping the array voltage approximately the same and increasing the available current.

The pair uses MC4 compatible 4mm solar connectors with tin plated copper alloy contacts and weather resistant PC/PA housings for permanent outdoor installation.

Connect Two Solar Panels in Parallel

The Y branch pair combines two positive panel connections into one positive output and two negative connections into one negative output. In a parallel solar connection, panel voltage remains approximately the same while current is combined. For example, two matching panels producing 5A each can supply approximately 10A to the regulator under suitable conditions. The panels should have closely matched electrical characteristics, particularly Vmp and Voc, and the combined array current must remain within the limits of the cabling, connectors and solar controller.

MC4 Compatible Connection

The connectors use the common 4mm solar connector format and are designed to connect with compatible MC4 style solar leads. This makes them useful for adding a second panel without cutting into existing panel leads or building a custom branch harness. As with any solar connection, make sure all mating connectors are clean, undamaged and fully locked together before energising the system.

Rated for Outdoor Solar Installations

When correctly mated, the connectors are rated IP67 for protection against dust and water ingress. The housings use UV resistant PC/PA insulation, while the internal contacts are manufactured from tin plated copper alloy to provide good conductivity and corrosion resistance. The connectors are also rated for salt mist exposure, making them suitable for caravan, 4WD, coastal and marine-adjacent installations when used within their specified limits.

Up to 1000V DC

The connector pair is rated for solar systems up to 1000V DC under IEC specifications. Maximum current depends on the conductor size used in the connected solar cables:

17A with 1.5mm² cable
22A with 2.5mm² cable
30A with 4mm² or 6mm² cable

The complete solar circuit should always be sized around the lowest rated component in the system.

Solar System Compatibility

Adding a second panel in parallel increases the current presented to the solar regulator, so regulator sizing should be checked before making the change. For best performance, parallel panels should normally have closely matched operating voltages. Connecting panels with significantly different Vmp values can prevent the array from operating efficiently. Appropriate solar fusing may also be required depending on the number of parallel strings, panel specifications and overall system design.
