Esperance, the place we both said, "Jeez, I could see us living here".
On Western Australia’s south coast, it is home to some of the most spectacular beaches in the world. With squeaky white sand, turquoise waters, and untouched national parks, it’s no wonder Esperance is a must-visit destination for travellers chasing the perfect coastline. Whether you’re camping, road-tripping, or just looking for a swim, here are the best beaches here, you need to explore.
Lucky Bay – Kangaroos on the Beach
Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park is Esperance’s most famous beach. Known for its ultra-white sand and friendly kangaroos lounging by the water, it’s often voted one of Australia’s best beaches. The bay is ideal for swimming, camping, and fishing, with a campground right behind the dunes.
Twilight Bay – Close to Town, Perfect for Swimming
Just a short drive from town, Twilight Bay is picture-perfect with its turquoise water, granite boulders, and safe swimming conditions. It’s family-friendly and one of the easiest beaches to visit if you don’t want to head far out of town.
Hellfire Bay – Turquoise Waters and Granite Cliffs
Also located in Cape Le Grand, Hellfire Bay is a favourite for picnics and lazy beach days. The water is a stunning shade of blue, framed by granite headlands. It’s less crowded than Lucky Bay but just as beautiful.
Blue Haven Beach – Sheltered & Scenic
Blue Haven Beach is a sheltered bay with calm waters, perfect for a swim or a snorkel. Its name says it all — a haven of blue. A wooden staircase leads down from the lookout to the beach, making it easy to access and a great spot for photos.
Wharton Beach – A 4WD Adventure
For travellers with a 4WD, Wharton Beach is an adventure playground. Located east of Esperance near Duke of Orleans Bay, it offers long sandy stretches perfect for beach driving, surfing, and fishing.
Ten Mile Lagoon – Natural Rock Pool
Ten Mile Lagoon is part of the Great Ocean Drive loop and offers a natural rock breakwater that makes for calmer swimming conditions. It’s a beautiful stop if you’re exploring the coastal drive around Esperance.

Our tips for the Perfect Beach Day in Esperance
Pack for the Sun
The sand at Lucky Bay and Twilight Beach is so white it reflects light — sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and light long sleeves are essential.
Bring Plenty of Water & Snacks
Some beaches, like Hellfire Bay or Wharton Beach, are a bit remote with no nearby shops. Pack water, snacks, or even a picnic so you can stay longer without heading back into town.
Arrive Early
At popular beaches, such as Lucky Bay and Twilight Beach, arriving early means easier parking, calmer water, and more space to yourself.
Safety
Twilight Beach is patrolled during peak times and is considered the safest swimming beach near town. For more remote spots, check surf and rips before diving in.
Don’t Miss the Sunsets
Head to West Beach, Blue Haven or the Great Ocean Drive lookouts for some of the best sunset views. Bring a blanket and stay a little longer after the crowds leave.
Respect the Environment
Esperance beaches are pristine. Take rubbish with you, stick to marked paths, and avoid driving on dunes to help keep them that way.
